Under one hundred years after Mohammad's passing in 632 the main Muslim history specialists started to expound on his life. These were Muhammad ibn Ishaq (d. 767), Muhammad ibn 'Umar al-Waqidi (d. c. 820); Muhammad ibn Sa'd (d. 845); and Abu Jarir at-Tabari (d. 923). These researchers recreated their account from oral conventions and early reports, and through their exertion we know more about Mohammad than we do some other Prophet.
By and by we have to remember that the stories of Mohammad's life were composed to fulfill contemporary standards and included inexplicable and fabulous stories that may be confused today. As we have noted with the stories encompassing the Axial Sages, the Old Testament and the Gospels, such records are not to be taken actually. Like the early stages accounts in the Gospels, these stories are not expected to relate chronicled occasions, but rather to explain the riddle of the prophetic experience. They answer the inquiries: What does it intend to be a prophet? … It is not essential whether the stories depicting the adolescence of Muhammad, Jesus or David are valid. What is imperative is the thing that these stories say in regards to our prophets, our saviors, our rulers: that theirs is a blessed and everlasting work, set up by God from the snippet of creation."
